Introduction To A Thriller

The thriller is a broad genre of literature, film, and television. It includes numerous, often overlapping sub-genres.

Examples are as fallows: From Wikipedia:

"Action thriller - In which the work often features a race against the clock, contains lots of violence, and an obvious antagonist. These films usually contain large amounts of guns, explosions, and large elaborate set pieces for the action to take place. These films often have elements of mystery films and crime films but these elements take a backseat to action. Notable examples are the James Bond films, The Transporter, and the Jason Bourne novels and films.

"Drama thriller - In which the story consists of the elements of a thriller and drama film. These films are usually slower paced and involves a great deal of character development along with plot twists. Examples include The Illusionist and The Prestige.

"Political thriller - In which the hero/heroine must ensure the stability of the government that employs him. The success of Seven Days in May (1962) by Fletcher Knebel, The Day of the Jackal (1971) by Frederick Forsyth, and The Manchurian Candidate (1959) by Richard Condon established this sub genre."

Examples of sub-genres are: Action Thriller/Conspiracy Thriller/Crime Thriller/Disaster Thriller/Drama Thriller/Eco-Thriller/Erotic Thriller/Horror Thriller/Legal Thriller/Medical Thriller/Political Thriller/Psychological Thriller/Spy Thriller/Supernatural Thriller/Techno Thriller

Character Profile: Antagonist and Protagonist

I have chosen to do one Antagonist and two Protagonist characters to write about.

Protagonist

Indiana Jones:

The character of Indiana Jones from the film series of the same title, he also 36 yrs old when the first film is done. He is a Protagonist because his first persona is an average guy who is a College Professor. He then can get into his other persona of ‘Indiana’ or ‘Indy’ where he is an adventurous archaeologist who travels all round the world deep into the areas to find rare and precious artefacts. Indiana is also a fallible character where he gets injured and hurt; this makes him a popular character because it shows that he is still just a normal person in a way, with no superpowers. He relates to the rest pf the film because it’s all about the adventures of Indiana whilst trying to escape from Antagonist who seek for him.

Antagonist

Nurse Ratched:

The character of Nurse Ratched is from the Novel ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’. She is an evil, cold sadistic character and earned the name ‘battleaxe’. She is the head nurse at a mental institution and is virtually in control of the lives of the patients because she has the power to control there medicine, food, time go to bed, toilet times, etc … She most of the time revokes this and is somewhat evil with her power and abuses it. She is integral to the story because of this.

Hannibal Lecter:

The character of Hannibal Lector is from the original novels by Thomas Harris which are Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. Hannibal Lecter is psychiatrist who then turns to be a cannibalistic serial killer which means he kills people and eats them. His character as an Antagonist is not flawed. Hannibal relates to the story of the film as the major focus point, the story is about him and his life from different times.
